Character Motivation:
What drives your character in their canon?
Initially, Webby was driven by a split need to emulate her idol, Scrooge McDuck, and to be a grand explorer in her own right. Once she was allowed to explore the outside world, she felt a desire to experience absolutely everything, be it as exciting as discovering ancient runes or going on a public bus for the first time. She still wants to be just like Scrooge, but she intends to enjoy every day to the fullest , so it's really hard to get her down. She tends to be optimistic about everything, so sometimes it's a matter of what isn't driving her that day. Helping out a friend? Yay! Figuring out ancient riddles? Sweet! Gluing sparkles to her notebooks? Sign her up!
What is their purpose, whether chosen or forced on them?
Webby doesn't really believe she was given a purpose in life, so she chose one herself. As stated before, she really wants to be like Scrooge in so many ways, and as an extension be a part of a big, exciting, loving family. She doesn't mind not being in the spotlight either – she's just as enthusiastic helping Scrooge as is she is finding her own place. Any task he gives her, no matter how small, brings her great joy.
Why do they do (or did) what they do in canon?
A love for family, a love for adventure, a love for almost gosh darn everything. Love and excitement drive almost all of her actions. All it takes is for someone to show her a drop of kindness and attention and Webby would bend over backwards for them. When that isn't the case, she enjoys life-threatening adventure, anything for an adrenaline rush, and to learn all about the world she was denied to access for so long.
Personality:
Webby Vanderquack is a bundle of dynamite, in both positive and negative meanings of the expression. Because of her shut-in life, every experience is a new one and thus she gives 110% to everything she tries. Even the most mundane things like riding a bus for the first time is enough to fill her with happiness and wonder. But because of her severe lack of social skills, this enthusiasm can be dangerous and annoying (ignoring personal space despite obvious signs they want to left alone, and ripping out wires so she can hide in a machine without thinking of what said wires were for). It's not that she's a callous or uncaring person - she genuinely loves her family and friends, and would do anything in her power to help them. It's just that she simply doesn't understand other people's mindsets, and needs to be taught.
One great example of this is the search for Della Duck, the long-lost mother of the triplets. It's the one mystery about Scrooge McDuck she's never been able to solve, and since she's obsessed with her greatest hero, she jumped at any chance to learn more about this hidden chapter. She was more concerned about solving the mystery and making it interesting than how the triplets felt about their mother, and this reached a peak when there was a possibility that Della betrayed Scrooge by stealing something of this. Della was thrilled at this prospect and wanted to explore this avenue, and when Dewey (Della's son) objected out of heartbreak, she genuinely couldn't understand why he was so despondent. When he admitted he didn't want to learn his mother was a bad person, only then did Webby understand how much agony this was causing her friend - and, showing her heart, she was willing to abandon her search to appease him and keep the mystery unsolved.
She has a hard time keeping her beak closed and lying, but spending time with the Duck family has helped strengthen both. It's not perfected, but she is willing to learn, and longs for love and acceptance as much as she wants adventure and excitement. She's shown jealousy over the triplets for their bond, and instantly bonded with the mysterious Lena despite all the warning signs. Her loving heart and eagerness to comply with almost anything manages to endear many to her, especially once she shows her real self. She managed to win over Lena (who initially was only using Webby and instead wound up genuinely enjoying their friendship) and became accepted as Scrooge's family (despite his reluctance to form bonds again after losing his family once before.) She finds it difficult to be angry or resentful over anyone for too long, as she views it as a waste of time. You have to seriously hurt someone she loves in order for her to stay mad. (Looking at you, Magica, you friend-murderer.)
She's an odd one, such as picturing her death ("I can't believe I'm about to die in a pit of spikes... I mean, I always hoped...") and rarely being able to stay still, but she's a good girl at heart who just needs to learn how the world works.
Canon Strength/Weaknesses:
Strengths:
Super strength (able to take on fully-grown men and women and kick their asses), expansive knowledge of several forms of combat, weaponry, and legends/myths. A possible magical affinity, given her connection to Lena. Also a relentless determination.
Weaknesses:
Naivety, too trusting, and while she is very strong attack-wise, defense wise she is still a little girl and thus can be defeated by taking advantage of the height difference.
Apprentice Sorcerer Application
Class: Warrior or Fairy.
Weapon: Grappling Hook Gun!
Magic Style: N/A
Element: Fire, due to her warm heart and fiery personality (and not due to the fact that letting this child have access to fire would be both hilarious and disastrous.)
Prince/Princess: N/A
Sample Section
First Person Sample:
[No, the girl upside-down is not a result of your mirror on the fritz. She's upside-down herself, hanging from a tree.]
Hi everyone! I was trying to think of what to do on my downtime in-between adventures here! Normally back home when we're on “break”, the boys play video games or watch TV or try to earn a Junior Woodchuck Badge, buuut they're not... here.
[beat.]
NOT THAT I MISS THEM WITH EVERY WAKING MOMENT. No, I'm fine! Everything's fine. I'm just trying to think...
[The nervous grin sells it, right? She clears her throat before trying again.]
So, what do you guys do for fun? Aside from adventuring and exploring, obviously, nothing's more fun than that. I was thinking of maybe doing some training? A little one on one combat? Or we could compare mythologies! Oh, oh, what if we do both? Every round of combat, we exchange the name of a prominent goddess! That would be so -
[Alas, she got so excited that she lost her leg's grip on the tree and falls down with a hard THUD. The mirror bounces in the grass, but does manage to capture her dizzily holding a finger up.]
… Ooor we can review medical practices, and hope I don't have a concussion.
Third Person Sample:
Normally, Webby could be found either on Main Street, trying to be social and friendly, or exploring all over Thunder Mesa, as it reminded her of Scrooge's Klondike days. But today was a little different – Fantasy Faire was her her forte, or to be more specific, one man's home. She had tried her hardest not to annoy the old man with her endless questions (and boy, that had been a struggle!) but these were no longer going to be questions just for the sake of knowing everything. Today was for the sake of a friend.
“So, Merlin,” she practiced her planned dialogue as she walked, hands behind her back, trying to imitate the way Louie would talk and act when he wanted to dig for info. “Let's say a friend had this... other friend. A wonderful, beautiful and mysterious girl who could capture your heart with one flick of her perfectly shaded eyes - ” Focus! Focus!! After a mental head-slap, she tried again “Anyway, long story short, she was blasted away by an evil sorceress, and I was hoping you'd know a way to bring her back?”
Webby stopped in her walk, frowning. Even with her lack of social skills, she could tell a few points were missing. Most people tended to frown on necromancy, after all. But this was different! Lena was different, and she deserved a chance to have a real life! If there was an opportunity for her to have one, Webby would do all in her power to find it. Surely Merlin would understand that, and if he didn't, she'd have to... ask him again. And again. And again.
With her heart pounding so loudly she wouldn't have been surprised if the entire kingdom heard it, she stood in front of the cottage door, ready to face what could be her biggest hope or most depressing failure – no, she wouldn't allow failure. Scrooge McDuck wouldn't let pessimism control him, and neither would Webby Vanderquack!
The image of her hero firmly resonating in her mind – along with a nice daydream of him cheering her on – she straightened her back and announced herself... with way more drama than was necessary. “SIR MERLIN, I NEED TO SPEAK TO YOU RIGHT AWAY! … Please.”
